Ogbia LGA – Linking Water Access, Health, and Development
Location: Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State
Community: Kolo, Oloibiri, Imiringi
Key Issues: Unsafe drinking water, oil pollution, underdevelopment
Background:
Ogbia, where oil was first discovered in Nigeria (Oloibiri, 1956), remains one of the least developed areas in the Niger Delta. Despite its historical importance, the communities lack potable water, electricity, and good roads.
Health Impact:
- Water from open wells and streams is often polluted with oil residue and fecal matter
- High incidence of cholera, dysentery, and typhoid
- Limited immunization coverage due to inaccessible terrain and poor health facilities
Response:
- Community-based water projects (e.g., hand pumps and boreholes) initiated by local leaders and NGOs
- Health education programs have reduced open defecation rates
- Still, lack of government support hinders scale-up
